It is reported that two nuclear reactors have exploded in Japan over the last three days. What does this mean for the West Coast and the fact that it is in the direct path of the jet stream which flows from Japan. Though it is uncertain as to how much this will directly affect the West Coast there is enough concern to at least be prepared for whatever may come.
On March 12th , Dr. David Brownstein writes about why potassium iodide is helpful to prevent radiation sickness,
Here are four things to do if you haven’t already:
- Monitor the situation via several news sources as well as the National Radiation Map, a real-time update of radiation levels in America.
- Get some potassium iodide, or perhaps even better Lugol’s iodine, which you may need to get at a pharmacy, or online like at Amazon (see below).
- Store some non-perishable food, water and medicine.
- Get the word out to your friends. Not in an alarmist way, but post this or other information about preparing and protecting yourself on Facebook or via email.
Why the precautions?
Radiation causes cancer and it can easily move with the wind currants. Though the radiation will be diluted by the time it reaches any other destination outside of Japan it is projected to be to the West Coast by Sunday and it will still be radiation.
The Japanese government has begun distributing potassium iodide pills to its citizens. Why? Potassium Iodide provides radiation protection in a nuclear disaster. When a cloud of radioactive iodine passes through a populated area, the thyroid glands of people exposed to the radiation can cause irreparable damage to the thyroid, which can lead to cancer.
There’s a really good preventive measure:
(this is a preventative solution that is not completely guaranteed but can help)
- Buy some potassium iodide
- Buy some iodine (kelp)
